Location-based considerations
There are a number of location-based opportunities and limitations specific to Nature-Assisted Practice interventions. Things you may wish to consider in this regard include:
- Is your intervention best delivered indoors or outdoors? Can it be delivered in both types of environment?
- If the intervention needs to be delivered outdoors, what impact is the weather likely to have?
- Is the intervention best delivered in a familiar setting (e.g. the school, or at Rough Close after a period of familiarisation), or would it be better to deliver your intervention in a novel environment?
Geographical affordances
Please do not feel that your intervention has to be delivered in an environment similar to Rough Close (i.e rural, woodland). There is increasing interest, for example, in the potential of settings such as:
- The sea and coastal areas (e.g. Blue Gym; Blue Health)
- Zoos, farms, aquaria and other animal-focused settings
- Parks and gardens
- School/campus grounds
- Heritage sites (historical, archaeological, etc)
Many adventure education programmes are primarily delivered in an online format, too – another reason for the web-based assignment for this module – allowing geographically-diverse and remote regions to be used as the basis for interventions.
